A Healthy Lifestyle is more than Exercise and Nutrition

Living a healthy lifestyle means more than just eating right and exercising. It also means being aware of the toxins in our environment and making an effort to reduce their impact on our lives. Creating a safe and healthy environment in your home is essential for maintaining optimal health and well-being. However, many people are unaware of the harmful toxins that exist in their homes, which can lead to a range of health problems. From cleaning products to air fresheners, many common household items contain toxins that can affect your health in various ways.

I’m bringing up this topic because it is time for our annual spring cleaning. Which means we are most likely using common household products to “clean” our homes. But, are those products really “cleaning” or are they adding more chemicals and toxins, leaving our homes a little more dangerous than when we started the cleaning? Here, I’ll share some simple tips to help you remove toxins from your home and create a healthier living space.

But first, let’s talk about why we need to start paying attention to what is lurking in things we encounter every day. Toxins can be found in many places, from the air we breathe to the food we eat. They can come from things like industrial waste, pesticides, gasoline, household cleaning products, and health and beauty products. All of these can cause serious health problems like cancer, respiratory illnesses, and reproductive health issues. Meaning, do you ever notice that your eyes might start burning or your skin get very dry or you develop a rash after using some of these products?

Opt for natural cleaning products

Many conventional cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that can cause respiratory problems, allergies, and other health issues. If you read the warning labels on the back of the bottles or cans, you can see of all of the side effects or health issues these products can cause. The majority, if not all of them, state to avoid ingesting or skin or eye contact. How safe does that make you feel?

For example, most of these products we are using on our tables or countertops to clean, but then we put our food on those surfaces, which means we are ingesting them.

To avoid these problems, consider using natural cleaning products, such as vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. These products are effective and safe to use, and they won’t harm your health or the environment. If you want a fresh scent, try adding a certified therapeutic grade essential oil to your homemade products. (Check your labels to be sure that the essential oils are pure with no extra synthetics mixed in.)

Use air purifiers

Indoor air pollution is a serious problem, and it can have a significant impact on your health. Especially for anyone who suffers from allergies or other breathing issues.

To remove harmful pollutants from your home, consider using air purifiers. These devices are designed to filter out pollutants from the air, including dust, pollen, and toxins emitted by furniture, paint, and cleaning products.

Choose organic bedding, furniture, carpeting and clothing

Many synthetic materials used in bedding, furniture, carpeting and clothing are treated with chemicals that can be harmful to your health. Flame retardants are ones that easily to mind.

To reduce your exposure to these toxins, consider choosing organic materials made from natural fibers like cotton or wool. Whenever possible, opt for no carpeting. Carpeting is made from the same synthetic materials, but also can hold in the dirt and other toxins that is in the air or brought in from the outside on our shoes.

Avoid using air fresheners

Air fresheners are often used to mask unpleasant odors in the home, but many of them contain harmful chemicals that can cause respiratory problems, allergies, and other health issues. Instead of using air fresheners, consider using natural alternatives like essential oils, which not only smell great but also have therapeutic properties that can improve your mood and reduce stress.

In addition, avoid using candles made with paraffins. These are derived from petroleum. If you notice that the candle jar is turning black around the rim, that is the chemicals within the wax and the wicks. That black is being emitted into the air, which can affect your lungs.

Choose natural pest control methods

Many conventional pest control products contain toxic chemicals that can be harmful to your health and the environment. To avoid these toxins, consider using natural pest control methods, such as diatomaceous earth, which is a safe and effective way to control pests without using harmful chemicals.

Small Steps Can Make  A Difference

By removing toxins from our homes, we can reduce our exposure to these harmful substances, which is essential for maintaining optimal health and well-being. This can be done by avoiding products with dangerous chemicals, by following these simple tips. We can also reduce our exposure to air pollution by using natural alternatives for heating, cooling, and other energy sources. Additionally, we can support businesses and organizations that are committed to using green and sustainable practices.

By taking the time to identify and remove toxins, we can create a healthier environment for ourselves and our families.
